Summary

From internationally bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand new Shadowhunters trilogy。 Evil is hiding in plain sight and the only thing more dangerous than fighting demons is falling in love。

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons。 When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin。 Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride。 Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians。 All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else。

But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London。 These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill。 London is immediately quarantined。 Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero。

This gave me everything I wanted! James is lovable, albeit quite the idiot sometimes。 Lucie is eccentric and reminds me of Will, which I love。 Cordelia is AMAZING。 Matthew makes me cry, laugh, and angry within the span of seconds。 I want more from Thomas’s and Christopher’s characters。 Anna is the light of my life。Grace can go kick rocks。 While the plot was hard to follow at times and the large cast of characters made me confused, I really did enjoy this first book in the series。 The humorous di This gave me everything I wanted!

As a fan of the Infernal Devices characters, I eagerly anticipated the release of this series。 And I was not disappointed。 I was a little wary of first because I wasn't the biggest fan of the Dark Artifices series, but this was such a good book。 I drank up every word。 The characters are just amazing, and Clare does a wonderful job continuing to build off the world she created in the Infernal Devices series。 James, Lucie, Cordelia, Matthew, Thomas, Christopher, Anna and Grace are all well-written As a fan of the Infernal Devices characters, I eagerly anticipated the release of this series。 And I was not disappointed。 I was a little wary of first because I wasn't the biggest fan of the Dark Artifices series, but this was such a good book。 I drank up every word。 The characters are just amazing, and Clare does a wonderful job continuing to build off the world she created in the Infernal Devices series。 James, Lucie, Cordelia, Matthew, Thomas, Christopher, Anna and Grace are all well-written characters, and I loved to see how their characters grew and progressed。 。。。more

This book started off slow only because there were a lot of character names and relationships to remember in the begging。 There are like 7 main-ish characters and probably 10+ peripheral characters related to them in some way。 It’s a little overwhelming BUT the trade off is, it sets us up for a lot of dynamic relationships。 I love the friendships and the way a lot of the main characters relate to one another。 I was initially frustrated with the character of James acting inconsistent until I foun This book started off slow only because there were a lot of character names and relationships to remember in the begging。 There are like 7 main-ish characters and probably 10+ peripheral characters related to them in some way。 It’s a little overwhelming BUT the trade off is, it sets us up for a lot of dynamic relationships。 I love the friendships and the way a lot of the main characters relate to one another。 I was initially frustrated with the character of James acting inconsistent until I found out it was so deliberate。 So yes overall the characters are a very strong part of the book。I love this book because it doesn’t necessarily rely on twists but it does have a few and paying attention is rewarded! I wish that it didn’t take so long for the plot to start happening but I understand the need to set up the characters and reacquaint the audience with the world。 The ending really saved the book in terms of the tension and how invested I was in the story。 Again part of me wishes that the payoff started a little sooner but overall this book KILLED ME in such a good way。 I will be waiting on pins and needles until I can get my hands on the sequel。 。。。more

Great book。 Having not read any of the other Shadowhunter series, I found it difficult to remember all the names and terms, but I quickly figured it all out and thoroughly enjoyed this story! There were a few slow parts, but it came together very well in the end and I can’t wait to read the second book in this series。

It is the most enjoyable book by Cassie that I’ve ever read。 I don’t know how should I express my feelings about this book。 I love the characters, the plot, the romance。 I love how the book starts with Lucie, when she was still a little child。 It’s a great start。 As I continue reading, it’s really enjoyable to learn the characters, who they are, what’s their relationship with each other and their personalities。 Although the relationship is kinda complicated and I am only clear of who is related t It is the most enjoyable book by Cassie that I’ve ever read。 I don’t know how should I express my feelings about this book。 I love the characters, the plot, the romance。 I love how the book starts with Lucie, when she was still a little child。 It’s a great start。 As I continue reading, it’s really enjoyable to learn the characters, who they are, what’s their relationship with each other and their personalities。 Although the relationship is kinda complicated and I am only clear of who is related to who by the end of the book, but that isn’t a big issue。 And then here comes the plot, as usual, the pace is a little bit slow, but the events are really memorable and interesting (and complicated too)。 I’m not sure if I’ll remember those hints that leads to the truth by the time Chain of Thorns is published LOL。 And then the romance! It’s a complicated feeling。 It’s so frustrating to have the character that I don’t like ( I bet everyone don’t) to be in the “love triangle”。 And it’s also heart breaking because the characters I love are in love triangle, because one of them will be hurt in the end。 The characters are really likeable, their personalities are well written, and I ought to know more about them by reading The Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy very soon。 Overall, romance- ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ , plot- ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️,characters - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️**Extra**I personally think that Cordelia’s part isn’t very strong yet (I love this character but not that immense yet),although it does play a major part in the important events, but I think the other characters have *almost* the same influence as her because there are many other characters who are special and influential as well。 From the cover of the book we know that Cordelia is the MC, and I believe that the main focus is on Lucie,James and Cordelia, but it seems that the MC are Lucie,James,Cordelia,Mathew,Thomas,Alastair 。。。more

Well, she did it。 Cassandra Clare finally managed to pull me over to the dark side and fall in love with a piece of her universe。 I hate myself。James, Cordelia, The Merry Thieves, Lucie, Jesse, AND ALISTAIR are all personally responsible for my becoming a hypocrite。 I still stand by my opinion that the Mortal Instruments Series is complete trash (with the exception of Magnus Bane) and I will never ever attempt a reread of the at series。 However, the Last Hours series and The Infernal Devices tri Well, she did it。 Cassandra Clare finally managed to pull me over to the dark side and fall in love with a piece of her universe。 I hate myself。James, Cordelia, The Merry Thieves, Lucie, Jesse, AND ALISTAIR are all personally responsible for my becoming a hypocrite。 I still stand by my opinion that the Mortal Instruments Series is complete trash (with the exception of Magnus Bane) and I will never ever attempt a reread of the at series。 However, the Last Hours series and The Infernal Devices trilogy are truly where CCs talent shines。 Both series are well written, beautifully constructed and the characters are one's that you fall head over heels in love with。 I loved the regency setting and how COG was the perfect blend of a regency romance novel with dark fantasy。 James Herondale is just as heroic and clever wonderful as Will and Tessa and Lucie is just as adorable and brave。 Matthew is my sad beautiful child and honestly, if he could just get his act together (or if someone for the love of God could ask him what's wrong!!) then my boy could do great things。 Honestly, I'm hoping by series end Matthew will have gotten the love and help he needs and in the end, it will be him who becomes Consul。 Because Charles is god awful。 I don't like him, I don't care if he redeems himself later on the man is horrible and he and Grace Freaking Blackthorn deserve one another。 I am so disappointed in Charlotte and Henry。 How could they have raised two sons and have one turn out to be a cold-hearted, arrogant, ridiculous bastard and have the other one become an alcoholic because he's trying to drown the pain from some horrid tragedy that occurred?Cordelia is a goddess and I was dying from the amount of pining between her and James。 the comparison between their love and the Persian poem Layla and Manjnun was lovely but it makes me nervous about the outcome of their relationship since the poem ends in tragedy!I love Alistair and all I'm saying is that he deserves a chance to make things right, especially since he so clearly cares about Cordelia and Thomas and the main reason for his bullying stemmed from his own bullying which was based primarily on his looks and his heritage。 Alistair made a lot of mistakes and hurt so many people but he desperately wants to make things right。 I was so happy for him when he finally dyed his hair back to its natural color and when he told Charles to take a hike。 I have faith in him and I think he'll prove how wonderful and heroic he truly is。 Grace on the other hand does not deserve a chance。 Grace is abusing James both mentally, emotionally, and physically。 Forcing him to kiss her while his mind is under her control is a form of assault as there is no way for James to refuse。 I know Grace has her own trauma with Tatiana and she's trying to protect Jesse。。。。but just because she has a reason does not excuse her actions especially when she is so clearly not sorry about it。 As James pointed out, there are a lot of options Grace could have chosen that would have prevented the demon attacks and wouldn't require her to continue to enslave James。 You can't tell me that Will and Tessa wouldn't understand, and I absolutely believe they would try to find a way to save Jesse given his unique circumstances and Lucie's connection to him and her amazing necromantic powers。 Grace is not a strong female character because she managed to control James or Matthew, two men, in order to take control of her own life。 She is a predator and James is her victim, plain and simple。 I don't want her redeemed and I sincerely hope the CC addresses her actions appropriately and doesn't try to justify her actions in the upcoming books。 This book ended on such a cliffhanger and I'm dying to read Chain of Iron。Happy Reading! 。。。more

This book would have gotten 5* except for the fact that it kept referring to events that occurred during the Infernal Devices series, which I have not read yet。If a book is deemed the first in a series as this one was, then it is, in my opinion, not supposed to refer to other storylines written by the same author in other series unless it is noted somewhere in the book's info that it's advisable to read such and such series prior to this one。 This book would have gotten 5* except for the fact that it kept referring to events that occurred during the Infernal Devices series, which I have not read yet。If a book is deemed the first in a series as this one was, then it is, in my opinion, not supposed to refer to other storylines written by the same author in other series unless it is noted somewhere in the book's info that it's advisable to read such and such series prior to this one。 。。。more

He really does have chemistry with Cordelia, he really does love her and now they're in this mess of a situation because of Grace like jesus fucking christ what the hell bro。 C'mon now don't do this to my Herondale boy Cassie >:( I happen to really like James okay >:(Now onto Matthew, I think he's an incredibly interesting character, a bi king that I really grew to care about。 I would love to know the murder he was involved in and his drinking problem, that boy needs help。 I was left confused as to why he'd have a crush on Cordelia though? that really??? did not make sense to me? The Lucie thing seemed fine, made more sense even though I think she's in love with Jessie the ghost lmfao。 I hope Thomas and Alastair solve their problem even though the latter was a complete arsehole in school, they really do seem so have something nice going on。 As to my girl Anna, my beloved I hope to read much much more about you in the second book, you deserve nothing but happiness。 And well I hope Grace rots in hell bro I really do not care about what she's been through she's mental for what she's done (also I think she's got faerie blood。。。 we'll see if I'm right)。Alright I think that's it? I loved seeing Tessa, Will and the rest of the TID characters make cameos, ya'll were great <3 I think the next installment will feel a bit like a punch to the gut just because shit hit the fan so fucking fast, it really is your typical Edwardian drama huh。 So yeah that was a solid read, felt nice to revist a world I really do love and well I guess I'll see you in the next installment。 。。。more

What can I say。。。☺ I love this book。 I love this whole Shadow hunter series。 From city of Ashes to Clockwork Princess to the Bane Chronicles to Lady Midnight to this and so forth。 I am a huge fan of Tessa and Will from The Infernal Devices series。 This book takes place in the early 1900s and is told around their children James and Lucie Herondale。 But the focus is more on Cordelia Carstairs。 I'm not going to add any spoilers。 I was immediately hooked from the first page。 Even though I kinda expe What can I say。。。☺ I love this book。 I love this whole Shadow hunter series。 From city of Ashes to Clockwork Princess to the Bane Chronicles to Lady Midnight to this and so forth。 I am a huge fan of Tessa and Will from The Infernal Devices series。 This book takes place in the early 1900s and is told around their children James and Lucie Herondale。 But the focus is more on Cordelia Carstairs。 I'm not going to add any spoilers。 I was immediately hooked from the first page。 Even though I kinda expected what was going to happen and who was behind what, I was still surprised。 Brilliantly written it was almost as if I was there with them。 Clare cannot let me down with this series。 I'd give 10 stars if I could。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

5⭐️I loved all the characters, the plot and the general vibe of this book! There were so many fun subplots and it felt like this was one of the rare Shadowhunter books that had less emphasis on shadowhunter politics and stratification and was more about adventure and social politics。 I feel like the characters are worryingly and messily intertwined which makes me a bit concerned for CoI haha, especially because of this book’s ending。 I don’t know if the Grace plot was supposed to be a twist, but I guessed that within the first few chapters so I felt so vindicated when my suspicions were confirmed。 I can’t wait to read CoI! 。。。more
